Who does not remember Quake and Unreal Tournament from ‘the early days’ of computer gaming? The days when a quick hand-eye coordinaton was the success to win or defeat in a closed off arena, where the best of the best of the best competed for the glory and fame… well, I might have, but I never became that good in the genre. I still think its a fun game type though, so when me and some friends found the ‘Quake Champions‘ on Steam (beta, F2P) we jumped on it, and have a couple of nights of gameplay in it so far (we even won a match against real people!!)
So, what is Quake Champions then?
The developers says it like this on Steam:
Developed by id Software, in conjunction with Saber Interactive, Quake® Champions is a return to the frenetic, fast-paced competition that established Quake as the originator of the multiplayer shooter genre more than 20 years ago. Quake Champions delivers the dark mythos of the first Quake combined with the groundbreaking multiplayer mayhem of Quake III Arena with a major modern twist – Champions. These fierce warriors each wield unique attributes and abilities, enabling players to compete in their own distinctive style, while adding an additional layer of strategy to the game.
Quake Champions is basically a ‘run-like-hell-shoot-anything-thats-not-your-friends’ with a wide variety of weapons ranging from shotguns, el-guns to rocket launchers and everything in between. Powerups, shields and health potions are scattered around the map / arena and your only goal is to blast others to smitherines while staying alive yourself for as long as possible (normally 20-30 seconds 🙂 ). If you have ever played Quake Arena, Quake Live, Unreal Tournament or similar games, you know what your in for. Its just more of the same recipie that makes a fun game to play with your friends either over the internet or at lan-parties and similar events.
